Here in the Northern Hemisphere, we have just passed the autumnal or fall equinox and are now moving into the autumn months. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere, you’re moving into your spring months and this post will be more relevant in 6 months time. Isn’t it magical that we have both autumn and spring in the world at the same time?

So Autumn… and its promise…

red leaves of autumnAutumnal Equinox occurs every year around 21st – 23rd September and signifies a change in seasons. The word equinox is derived from the Latin aequus and nox meaning ‘equal night’. It is a time when day and night are equal and balanced.

As we move into the autumn months after the equinox, we observe how the season changes. The summer has given us an abundance of fruit and growth and it is time to reap the rewards of the seeds sown in spring and celebrate our harvest. There is joy in the harvest, sadness in the ending of growth and within the fruit, there are the seeds for new life. The whole circle of life can be realised in the autumn season.

As we move into the autumn months, the days get shorter and the nights get longer. These darker nights are ideal for spiritual transformation. They allow us to ‘hibernate’ and move inward. Darker nights mean more time and space for inward looking activities – for meditation, for reading, for writing, for quiet time. The darker nights also allow us to realise and embrace the whole of ourselves.

We notice nature’s changes at this time and realise that there is the need for darkness and this lends itself to us thinking of our ‘darkness’ – maybe we have been through some challenging times this year. Maybe there have been painful events which we are working through. As nature shows us her ‘dark side’, so too can we realise and embrace our darkness. We can look for the lessons and learn from these. Understanding our dark or shadow self means a deeper understanding of our spiritual self and greater compassion for ourselves and for the challenging times which others are experiencing also.

As we move into the autumn months, nature lets go…leaves fall…growth stops. This is the time of release; the time to let go of those things which you no longer need; a time to simply be in this busy world. There is no rush or hurry, it is a time for incubation, a time for deep nurturing and deep inward looking.

So over to you, dear soul… what promise are you receiving from these autumn months? What part of you or your life are you embracing? What are you letting go of? What are you awakening? I would love to know.

For me, the next few months of autumn will be about writing, moving deeper inward as I write and heal and discovering new, amazing things within myself. I am so looking forward to it.

Love, Bindi xx
